How Debating with AI Made Me Smarter

Your Brain Needs a Workout Too

Remember when real debates happened around dinner tables, front porches, or—in the glory days of caffeine-fueled academia—on a squeaky chair in Debate Club? Me too. They were supposed to sharpen your thinking, expand your perspective, and maybe help you win an argument without screaming, insulting, crying or leaving the room.
But then… real life happened. And instead of reasoned discourse, we got name-calling, ancient resentments, wild topic changes, and our old friend whataboutism (that sneaky tactic where someone avoids accountability by pointing fingers elsewhere—"What about what they did in 2007?!").
Let’s face it: most “debates” these days are just emotional dodgeball with no winners, especially online. You walk in wanting a conversation and leave needing a nap, a therapist, and possibly an exorcist.
Enter AI.
Yep. I started debating with ChatGPT about a year ago. At first, I thought it would be just a novelty—kind of like arguing with a super polite know-it-all. But to my surprise, it became something deeper: an incredibly effective, bias-checking, thought-refining, emotionally-neutral thinking partner.
No eye rolls. No personal jabs. No snarky comebacks about what I said in 2015.
Just respectful responses, research-backed insights, and even a gentle “here’s a source for that” when I asked for receipts. Sometimes it reinforced my views. Sometimes it didn’t. But either way—it stretched my mind. And that, friends, is the real juice of critical thinking.
Is AI perfect? Nope. It’s programmed by humans, so yes, it carries a whiff of our weird biases. But compared to the flamethrower culture of modern discourse, it’s practically Socrates with a Wi-Fi connection.
The result? I’ve become a sharper thinker in both life and business.
Whether I’m weighing a personal decision, crafting a strategy, or solving a complex challenge, the muscle of critical thinking is stronger than ever. Like physical fitness, mental agility needs regular exercise—and for me, AI has become the gym.
If you want to elevate your decision-making and see through the noise, it’s time to make critical thinking a daily habit. AI just happens to be one heck of a smart brain workout buddy.
